The Empyrean series, or the Fourth Wing series if you go by what everyone actually calls it, is where the whole romantasy takeover of my shelf started. Dragons, a war college that kills more cadets than it graduates, and a slow burn worth every page. I read Fourth Wing twice before Onyx Storm even came out, so make of that what you will.
Where to Start
Fourth Wing, and this is the one series on this shelf where that's not a suggestion. Every book ends on a cliffhanger, and each one reframes what came before. Start anywhere else, and you'll be lost and spoiled at the same time.
Publication order and story order are the same here, which keeps things simple: Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Onyx Storm.
The World
Basgiath War College trains dragon riders, and it does not care whether you survive the training. Violet was built for a quiet life among books and got sent to the deadliest quadrant instead. What starts as survival turns into war, politics, and the kind of romance that makes you distrust every quiet moment. It gets darker and bigger as it goes, and the books get longer right along with it.
What's Coming
The series is planned for five books. Three are out, and both remaining titles are still to come.
Before then, there's Threshing Day, arriving September 29, 2026. It's a 176-page collection of thirteen stories set in the Empyrean world, and Yarros has been clear about one thing: it is not book four. Think of it as more time in this world while the next main book is written, not the next chapter of Violet's story. It's open for preorder now.
