THE SHOP

What is Lunaria?

Lunaria is an independent romance and romantasy bookshop based in Normal, Illinois. It's run by one person (and one golden retriever) who reads the genre obsessively and hand-selects every book in the catalog. Online-only for now, with bigger plans for later.

What genres do you carry?

Romance and romantasy, broadly. Contemporary romance, dark romance, romantasy, fantasy romance. This is a specialty shop and it stays that way.

Do you have a physical storefront?

Not yet. Every order ships from Normal, Illinois.

BOOKS

What's the difference between new and used books?

New books are ordered through Bookshop.org and fulfilled directly by them — every purchase supports independent bookshops, including Lunaria. Used books are hand-selected, listed individually, and shipped from Normal.

What condition are used books in?

Most are in good to very good shape. The exception is the Dog-Eared section, which is exactly what it sounds like — books that have been genuinely read, possibly highlighted or annotated. Listed and priced accordingly, so there are no surprises.

How we grade our books

Every used book here is one I've held, checked, and graded by hand. I'd always rather under-promise on condition than have a book show up looking rougher than you expected, so when a copy sits between two grades, I round down. Here's what each grade means at Lunaria.

  • New: Trade-fresh and unread, exactly as it comes from the publisher. I reserve this for genuinely new stock, not gently handled copies.
  • Like New: Reads as new. No marks, no creases, no wear. Often a copy that was shelved and barely opened. If it's one of my own unread copies, it'll say so in the description.
  • Excellent: Clearly been read once or twice, but still in lovely shape. No writing, no highlighting, no sun-faded pages, spine still sound. Just not quite crisp enough to call Like New.
  • Good: A real used book with some honest wear: a softened spine, a bent corner, maybe a former-library sticker or a name inside the cover. Nothing that gets in the way of reading it. Any notable flaw is shown in the photos.
  • Fair: Well-loved and more visibly worn, think heavier creasing, some markings, or a missing dust jacket, but complete and fully readable. I photograph the flaws so there are no surprises.
  • Poor: Reading copies only, with real damage like a cracked spine or heavy wear. Priced accordingly, always described plainly, and listed only when the book is still worth reading.

Whatever the grade, I photograph the actual copy you'll receive, flaws included, and pack everything to arrive the way it left.
